In The Hospital
Tommy and I stayed in the hospital until March 6 and had lots of help from Grandma Mattern "Gammy" (yes, this name was plagiarized from the Seinfeld episode where Elaine was mistaken for a young man's grandmother "Gammy") after wanting to have a more recuperative stay than after Karina was born. She graciously stayed with me in the hospital every night and almost all day long helping take care of Tommy when the nurses were unavailable to come quickly...which was often.
Luckily for all of us Tommy seems to be an "easy baby." He took to nursing like a professional (I think he was reading the nursing manual in utero) and slept well, often needing to be awakened at the 4 hour mark to feed him. His biggest hardship was needing to have blood drawn to check his serum bilirubin level. They make a pin prick in the heel of his foot and then squeeze for what seems like forever (and with one inexperienced lab tech it truely did take at least 5 minutes, if not 10) to get the blood into this tiny tube. The initial level was 8 so they checked it again the next day to see if the level was dropping, and much to our dismay they lost the sample and had to prick Tommy again. And then even more frustrating was that the level was again 8 so they had to prick him a fourth time the next day.
